Day 334

Edibles…

Over the course of the last few days I’ve stumbled across interesting differences and similarities between London and The States, so I thought I’d share a few of these observations here today.

I finally got to try the classic British dessert, ”Sticky Toffee Pudding”.

While I enjoyed it quite a bit, I didn’t find it particularly sticky, I’ve never had toffee that wasn’t rock hard, and it reminded me more of a cake than anything even resembling “pudding” back home.

While out and about I came across two rather interesting modern sturctures.

Here we have the London “Apple”…

And the Gherkin…

In Chicago we have “The Bean”

Source (C.W.)

When was the last time you saw prawns prepared like this in the US? It seems that we Americans tend to remove as much of the exterior/shell as possible before serving. Not in London…

These gorgeous chili - garlic prawns from The English Pig were absolutely phenomenal!

It was explained to me that Kebabs are one of the most common forms of late night food in London (sometimes enjoyed while mildly intoxicated)…

Not the pizza, burgers or tacos that you might seek out in the US.

In Chicago, Oysters look like this…

But in London…they look like this…

If you know of any other similarities or differences, I’d be interested in seeing what you come up with.

Cheers!

  1. awesome!! very clever!

  2. Not food related, but…my grandma was British and my brothers and I used to get a kick out of asking her what they called erasers in England. You’ll have to ask a local for the answer. Not sure if they still use the same terminology, so you may need to ask an old lady local.

  3. Don’t call your pants pants as that’s what they call underwear, can be rather embarrassing.

  4. Josh- Having just moved to the UK a week ago…here are a few we have found:
Jelly in the States/Jam in the UK
Jello in the States/Jelly in the UK
(Yes…pudding is like a cake…yorkshire pudding is made of pancake batter)
Eraser in US/ Rubber in UK
    Fries in US/Chips in UK
    Chips in US/Crisps in UK
    Pants in US/Trousers in UK
    Underware in US/Pants in UK
    Sweatshirt in US/Jumper in UK

oh-there are SO many more! My 4 year old asks me daily…”what do they call “XXX” here in England?!”

  5. Lol @Adriel… thats the very first thing I told my Canadian friend when he visited! STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR PANTS IN PUBLIC! haha.
Well you have to go down to basics dont you! Grab some chips! make sure its from a traditional chippie tho :) “fries” are not the same, and the chunky Chinese style chips dont count either. Proper chips from s fish and chip shop.

  6. And don’t ask for a napkin at a restaurant. It’s not polite.

  7. It’s not the “apple”, it’s the “Bollock”

  8. Cigarettes are called Fags. I was actually asked if I could share a fag from an England citizen visiting the US about 30 years ago,(while riding a bus across the United States from Texas to California).
