Day 296

Fond Memories of San Diego

Like many great cities before it, a one week visit became three weeks of fun, food and new friends. Here are a few more moments that stand out:

I don’t usually get a home cooked meal while living off Groupons, but it is even more rare that I actually eat breakfast. I was truly privileged to be able to indulge in…

Phil's family's Æbleskivers.

These pancake-like spheres were incredible. Some were plain while others had bits of dates hiding inside. Thank you Phil!

Another thing I used to do but has become exceedingly rare in my current lifestyle is poker. As you can imagine, not being able to touch money isn’t particularly conducive to gambling.

Maybe the first poker game with a Groupon buy-in?

I was a bit rusty and lost a Groupon for a Sudatonic Body Wrap and another for Pilates. Oh well, I was gunning for a much needed massage, you really can’t have too many.

After poker we stopped for some food. Since I obviously couldn't be involved in the transaction, it was easier to pull up with the back seat to the window. I think that poor employee was terribly confused.

Dinner meetup with an incredibly fun group of locals.

Later in the week I joined the ladies for happy hour and pedicures.

While on the Gaslamp Segway Tour with Another Side of San Diego, we sped down the Highway to the Dangerzone and spotted…

The bar from Top Gun!

Just across the bay…

On the way back to Lil' Piggy's BBQ I was treated to this beautiful view. The restaurant is located right at the ferry landing in Coronado.

Another day, while walking into a mall to get my parking validated after lunch, I spotted The Body Shop…

It hit me that I had a Groupon that needed using so I popped in to make good use of it. I guess this is as close to an impulse buy as you can get while living off Groupons.

I decided on small bottle of cologne and a replacement shave oil.

The girl at the counter commented that I probably picked the two smallest items in the store. Makes sense when you have to carry every extra ounce on your back, so I was pleased to keep this purchase to a mere 3.8oz.

Another small but valuable item worth carrying is a phone headset. Considering the vast amount of time I spend attached to my iPhone, I’d been struggling the last couple months (especially while driving) since my old one broke.

I met Nate & Sarah at game night and they graciously offered to help me out with a fancy new Bluetooth.

Would it surprise you to hear that often times my helpers are quick to aid and in no hurry to claim their half of the trade? A testament to the generosity and selflessness of Live Off Groupon followers, sometimes I even have to insist on giving them something return. I am still waiting to hear back from this couple, as well as many others about what they’d like in exchange for their kindness. [Edit: Nate & Sarah are going on a romantic hot air balloon ride in exchange for my new gadget.]

Next time you hear from me I’ll be in living it up in San Francisco…if all goes according to plan.

  1. It is a very interesting bold idea - living off groupons! Good Luck!

  2. Sorry to see a troll on your blog Josh. And sorry I couldn’t make it out to SF this last weekend. Hope you are having fun out there - if you can get someone to take you to the Exploritorium, I think you will really enjoy that.

  4. Wow! Marcus must have been fired from Living Socials marketing team for not coming up with a similar promotion. Have fun in SF!!

  6. Don’t worry about that loser. He’s probably just jealous that you get to live all those adventures!

Can’t wait to hear all about your SF trip. You were only here a day and a half when we met so you didn’t get to do much yet. Tell me what else you’ve done, and hope you enjoyed the Alcatraz tour and Hornblower Dinner Cruise!
