Day 310

Wined & Dined (San Francisco, CA)

Being so close to wine country certainly has its advantages. I certainly received more Groupons for wine tastings in the San Francisco area, than any other city.

Kristen and Diana joined me for an afternoon wine tasting at the Winery Collective near Fisherman's Wharf.

The wine tasting included two bottles to go, which I let each of my guests take with them.

For out first of seven tastes, Amy gives us a choice of two whites.

We also had lunch that afternoon at Cafe Flore in the Castro. The Kahlua Pork Hash was excellent but it was the presentation of our appetizer that really blew me away…

The Shitake & Brie Crostini

Later in the week, I took a little drive up north to check out the St. Francis Winery in Sonoma…

A gloomy day at a beautiful vinyard.

So far that is the third winery I’ve visited this year and the weather has been practically identical each time. What luck! Actually, I’d never complain about my luck, it’s actually pretty ridiculous how lucky I am.

One of my Facebook followers turned friend joined me for the day. Lacey and I both agreed that the Rowe Vinyards Old Vines Zinfandel was our favorite.

It's hard to beat great wine, especially when it comes with a view like this.

In addition to the wine we stopped at one of my favorite breweries on the way up and we had dinner at Casa Mañana in San Rafael on the way back.

The restaurant was a little difficult to find (hidden in the courtyard of a medical center), but the pupusas certainly made it worth the trip (and mild confusion).

Even my hotel had a daily wine tasting complete with cheese pairing from 4-5pm. This was not the reason that the Fairmont Heritage Place Hotel in Ghirardelli Square earned the title of my favorite hotel…ever, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

The living rooms are homey...

The bedrooms are comfy, the bathrooms are spacious, the employees are friendly, there is a full kitchen, complimentary bottled water & Ghirardelli chocolates, free dvd rentals that come with popcorn, continental breakfast and best of all…

This huge balcony overlooking The Square.

I made a joke at dinner with this group about how my balcony was big enough for a 40 person cocktail party...

and next thing you know we're back at my hotel and everyone is in a bathrobe and slippers with a drink in hand!

Shortly thereafter we broke out the Bananagrams, rounding out one of my favorite completely random and unplanned evenings of the year.

I look forward to a return visit to San Fran down the road. I already promised Girlpawn I’d bring her back to my favorite places and you can rest assured we’ll be staying at the Fairmont in Ghirardelli Square when we do.

  1. Did you ever feel uncomfortable in San Fran being heavyset? I always want to go to the west coast, and will make it there sometime, but I don’t want to get gawked at because of my weight.

    Josh,
It was so great getting to meet you! I feel honored to have been a part of this amazing adventure Groupon has sent you on! Our lunch at Cafe Flore has me planning another trip to the city soon! I want to try the Cashew & Mushroom veggie burger, but that Kahlua Pork Hash was so good, I may just order both!!! :) James and I are planning a getaway to SF & I think I have him convinced to stay at the Fairmont Ghirardelli Square, your balcony was reason enough! Thanks for the bottle of wine, that was a great Syrah!
Looking forward to reading about the rest of your adventures, best of luck Josh!
